New Harmonies Coming to the Sturgis Public Library

New Harmonies provides a fascinating, inspiring, and toe-tapping listen to the American story of multi-cultural exchange. The story is full of surprises about familiar songs, histories of instruments, the roles of religion and technology, and the continuity of musical roots from “Yankee Doodle Dandy” to the latest hip hop CD.

The Grand Opening for the exhibit will be at the Sturgis Public Library on March 18th at 1:00 P.M. followed by a performance by the South Dakota Symphony Lakota Music Project at the Sturgis Community Center at 2:00 P.M.

New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the South Dakota Humanities Council. It is sponsored locally by the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation, Sturgis Area Arts Council and the Sturgis Public Library.

Funds for the grants are from the Sturgis Corporate Sponsorship Program and the motorcycle raffle conducted by the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce.

Author/musician Kathy Biesheuvel will talk about her book and sign copies of it at the Sturgis Public Library’s program room on January 26th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Her book, Could You Play a Little Something for our Wedding?, gives the reader an entertaining glimpse into what it is like to provide music for a wedding. Kathy, a former longtime Sturgis resident, has been a musician for many years. Come visit with her and get a head start on your gifts for 2012. Refreshments will be served. This event is jointly sponsored by GFWC affiliate Sturgis Woman’s Literary Club, Sturgis Public Library, and Sturgis Area Arts Council.

Donate a decorated pot with a patio or house plant or anything related to gardening to the Sturgis Public Library by May 2nd to be exhibited and bid on in a silent auction.

The Party and Final Bidding will be on May 6th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Stop by the library to see artistic pots decorated by community members. Refreshments will be served.

Author Sandra Brannan will be at the Sturgis Public Library on Tuesday, April 12 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. She will discuss her book In the Belly of Jonah and share other fun facts about her writing. Green Thumb Gala Coming to the Sturgis Public Library

Stop by the library to pick up a terra cotta pot to decorate, fill with a plant and then donate it back to the library in May for the 2011 Green Thumb Gala. The painted pots with plants will be auctioned off in the library the first week in May. You will also be able to vote on your favorite for the People's Choice Award. Share your artistic ability and green thumb in this fun event!
